American Attack on Venezuela Fuels Fears of Potential Danish Territory Acquisition.

The latest US-led strike in the South American nation and the detention of its leader have sparked unease regarding America's designs on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's base have reportedly focused on the resource-rich island in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Only hours following the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a symbolic map. The picture showed Greenland covered in the American flag, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to absorb the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should keep cooperate as such. US security is equally Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget this year, earmarking a large amount expressly for Arctic and regional security. "Furthermore, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Goals

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the president's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic allies with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is viewed as vitally important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a significant media interview, the leader declined to rule out the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's residents seek independence from Copenhagen, there is also scant appetite to join the United States. The island has had the option to seek independence for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy director focusing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
